Sanding material is stock- piled, sand sheds are full to overflowing, snow poles are going up and a fleet of heavy duty snow plows and trucks are standing by as the State Highway Division readies for winter. To Vet Post Jon A. Mangis, Director of the Oregon Department of Veteran' Affairs, has been elected Far West District Vice President of the Nation- al Association of State Direc- tors of Veterans Affairs. Mangis will serve as Vice President for the forthcom- ing administrative year 1986- 87. The purposes of the As- sociation are to provide a medium for the exchange of ideas and information; to facilitate reciprocal state ser- vices; to foster a better understanding of national veterans' problems; to se- cure uniformity and equality of service in all the states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin • Islands; and to maintain an interest in all veterans' legis- lation. Oregon was also selected as the site of the Associa- tion's national convention in 1989. THANK YOU I want to thank all of those who brought food to my home for the family of Celin Fans. It was very much appreciated. Berdean Whiteley "Summer seasonal crews such as striping, oiling and pavement patching crews will be disbanded and some of those personnel will go to their winter seasonal assign- ments where they operate the heavy snow removal equipment," said John Shel- drake, maintenance opera- tion engineer for the divi- sion. Three-quarters of all Highway Division trucks-- more than 700 in all--are snow plow equipped. High- way crews also use more than 50 giant rotary snow blowers to keep Oregon's mountain passes open, said Sheldrake. Nearly 400 pieces of road sanding equipment will be used around the clock this winter by more than 230 state highway crew members at 13 snow zone mainten- ance stations. The largest maintenance crews are standing by at Government Camp, Park- dale, Santiam Junction, Ash- land and Bend. Other crews are located at Warm Springs, Oakridge, Prospect, Chemult, Lake of the Woods, Meacham, Elgin and Austin.
