Softball Request Resurfaces by Steve Backstrom of the Hells Canyon Journal About two dozen parents and students attended the July Pine Eagle School Board meeting to lobby tbr a softball program to be implemented in the 1996-97 school year. Two parents -- Mary Huston and Susan McKim -- volunteered to coach a potential softball team without compensation, to help get the program off the ground, affordably. Students said they were aware that only Nyssa among Wapiti League teams currently fields a girls' softball team. However, they said they would be willing to play against the tougher competition of larger schools if schools with comparable enrollments don't have softball programs. A committee of board members, parents, students and superintendent Steve Peterson was appointed to study the options for a softball program. A report is expected at the August meeting. Also at the meeting the board: discussed the future of senior field trips -- a motion to phase out such trips over three yea failed by a 3-3 vote; reappointed Dave Bird to the Vocational Agriculture Advisory Committee until the August board meeting, when revised constitution and bylaws fbr the committee are expected to be approved; accepted the resignation of Nancy Gover, 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher at Halfway Elementary; elected Cal Ransom chairman for the 1996-97 school year; Shawn Thatcher was elected vice-chairman. A Royal Welcome to the Welcome! To the 39th Annual Hells Canyon Jr. Rodeo. My name is Melinda Petersen, and 1 am proud to represent the H.C.J.R. as their Queen one more time. ! have lived in Richlandfor 14 years with my parents, Joh n and Nina Petersen, two sisters, A manda and Stephanie, and one brother, Lil' John. I am 17 and looking forward to college, in a year, to major in Ag journalism and photography. Some of my other interests include FFA, track, softball, basketball chorus, journalism and my 5- year old mare which ! am riding. This past year has been fun and very rewarding. I have two wonderful princesses who 1 enjoy riding with. one being a loud, obnoxious sister (but ! love her.t) and the other being a quiet, shy friend,t These two have been a big help with fund-raisers and ideas, and I thank Courtney's morn for her time and work she put in. Thanks Courtney and Amanda for making my year a great one---let's have fun for the rest of it! The following people who I am about to thank play a BIG and important part in our rodeo. Without them this rodeo would not run as efficiently as it does. Linda Miller-- Linda is the boss-man of the operation. With her behind the books and Doug Miller and Doug Payton behind the chutes, everything isjust great. Thank you, Linda, and your 1996 Hells Canyon crewt I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Melody Huff, our court mother, forgiving us what time she could and getting us to where we are supposed to be/Pat Parker lives in Richland, and she made the wall-hanging we are selling raffle tickets for. Thanks Pat--everyone says the wall-hanging is wonderful! Time, effort, and money was put into the flowers behind our saddles. My grandma, Nina Hicks, lives in Boise, Idaho, and ! want to thank her vet3, much for those. They're great/And last, but certainly not least, I'd like to thank my morn and Cou rtney's morn for making our vests, leg wraps and neck ties. A lot of time was put into those things and we really appreciate it. My morn spent hours upon hours driving us to our various parades and rodeos. She encouraged both me and my sister to put forth that extra effort to make #all worth while. And my dad put up with those awful beasts we're riding and was patient with our going, going, going. Thanks Morn and Dad! Now, we invite you to sit back and enjoy the performances we have for you. And if you happen to see Doug or Linda Miller, Doug Payton, or anyone else that works in the arena, offer a word of thanks or commend them on their hard work. Thanks for coming and for your support! Have a great day! Melinda Petersen 1996 Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo Queen MELINDA PETERSEN Submitted photo
