Since November 5, 1995, Oregon has had permissive dialing for the new 541 area code. Permissive dialing means long distance calls into the 541 area code will complete when dialing with 503 or 541. Beginning June 30, 1996, any long distance call not dialed with 541 will not be completed. Oregon's new 541 area code covers most of the state, including Albany and Lincoln City south to Ashland and Medford, and from east of Mt Hood Meadows to the Oregon/Idaho border. Portland, Salem and surrounding cities as far east as Mt. Hood Meadows and communities west to the coast will retain the 503 area code. This means that all of Baker County has been assigned to the new area code, along with the rest of eastern and southern Oregon.
