She is shown here holding one of a line of dolls, made for Pine Valley Trading Company, which she calls "Country Babes." Local Buffalo Gal Elected Barbara Ashley Phillips, of Hells Canyon Bison, Halfway, was elected president of the Northwest Bison Association at its recent annual meeting. Phillips began raising bison in 1991 and now has a herd of 78 animals on 160 acres with a bed and breakfast inn. As a single woman rancher whose grown sons are employed out of the area, Phillips has re- ceived more than a few raised eyebrows. "For example," she says, "when we went to five-wire New Zealand fencing, there wasn't much of it around. Now that's changed," she says. "Maybe people got to think- ing that if it worked for bison, it had to work for cattle. And what we'readoing doesn't seem so strange any more." Phillips is a member of the ROGUES, a Baker County holistic management group composed of three ranches and seven families who have been meeting and studying Allan Savory's"Holistic Man- agement" together for the past 3 years. This year she completed Stan Parson's "Ranching for Profit" school and is continuing with that group through a program called "Grad Link." Phillips holds a law degree from Yale University and has been a professional mediator for the past 17 years. She is the au- thor of a book of stories and examples of resolving dis- putes titled "Finding Com- mon Ground: A Field Guide to Mediation." Members of the Northwest Bison Association include bi- son producers and those in- terested in the bison indus- try from Oregon, Washing- ton, California, Idaho, Mon- tana, South Dakota and Canada.
