Page 2 Hells Canyon Journal, May 6, 1987 S -- 1987 by Pat Garrigus I don't think a "Rent a Mother" business would suc- ceed, but how about a "bor- row one?' ' I was making a bed this morning with apair of sheets printed with yellow roses that had belonged Miss Ella and found myself bend- ing over to sniff the middle of a fatyellow rosebud. I was with my mother when she bought those sheets "be- cause life and the gastro-in- testinal system gets a little ridiculous after 80 and i can at least imagine I can smell the roses." "Oh, little mama," I thought and sniffed a little and realized here's another Mother's Day coming with- out Miss Ella. And thought of all the friends in just the past year Who would be facing that day for the first time without Mother. Well, God could just send an angel around to give Miss Ella a hug for me. Then I got to considering it was a pretty sure bet Mama wasn't flap- ping around Heaven on a pair of wings herself because it probably wasn't standard issue to little Texas ladies with'salty language who wouldn't be above telling the Creator He'd surely goofed for giving avocados such large seeds and not letting them grow in Oregon and that Certain body parts could have had a better design and longer warranty. My mother would have had no interest in creating the world but would have enjoyed a consultant's posi- tion and a whack scissors at some of the blueprints. My mind either tends to go into neutral or freewheel- ing while making beds and it was a not too logical but short jump to some other outspoken and strong wom- en I've been mothered by and that this nurturing by women among worsen must be a universality that women share. I plumped the pillows and tried to accept, again, that being the honoree on Moth- er's Day and not the honoror was how it was going to be. How many years does it take before that shoe fits natural- ly? And you quit smelling roses printed on a sheet? Not quite yet. Until that shoe fits like a glove, some of you are just goiqg to have to share a few mothers that I'll borrow, if only in my thoughts, next Sunday. "Borrow a Mother Day" should have a ready market. Thanks for the lend Dee, Vernon, Firmin, Midge and Carolyn . . . and whoever else's mother I can snitch a part of for me.
