Hells Canyon Journal February 19, 1992 Page 9 Continued from page 8 Although Brian Miller purchased his ultra-light airplane in Alaska, he prefers the Pine Valley environment for flying it. "Pine Valley is perfect," he says. "It has low wind, a lot of flat area to land, and the valley is beautiful." His ultra-light is a Robertson B 1 -RD, powered by a Rotex 55-horsepower two- cylinder, two-cycle engine. "It's essentially a snowmobile engine, but slightly modified with gear rather than belt drive, and improved ignition, to make it more dependable." Miller feels the B1-RD, which is of aluminum frame construction, is the best ultra- light made. Having added extra wing support cables, he says it handles similarly to a Piper Cub, but with shorter take-off space required (about 50 feet at this elevation) and lower cruising speed (35 mph). To qualify as an ultra-light the aircraft must meet five criteria: i) maximum five- U.S. gallon fuel capacity; 2) maximum stall speed of 24 mph; 3) maximum cruising speed 55 mph; 4) maximum dry weight (less fuel, pilot or parachute) of 254 pounds; and ..... COMING IN FOR A LANDING-- Ultra-light pilots find Pine Valley ideal because of its many flat fields and usual lack of wind. DO YOU NEED CHILD CARE? WE CAN HELP!
