Page 10 Hells Canyon Journal February 16, 1994 /s byt smLt Our thanks to Walt Seifert, professor emeritus at Ohio State University School of Journalism, who wrote this story in 1983. Walt is the fa- ther of Halfway Elementary School teacher Betsy Goodman, and is a frequent visitor to Pine Valley. "In the late 1800s, my mother was a freshman at Cleveland Normal College. When her mother suddenly died, her father ordered her home, and she dropped out of school. "Next week an old profes- sor named Jacob Seligsohn knocked on her door. "You- must come back,' he said. Tou will make a good teacher.' Mother sobbed, 'I have to stay home and keep house for my father.' \ Photo outttnW of Walt Selfert WALT SEIFERTinyoungeryears. 'That night Seligsohn re- turned, this time to see grand- father. %Ve want your daugh- ter back in school. She can do your cooking, keep your house dean, and get educated at the same time,' he said. "Gramps relented. Mother graduated and was a fine teacher, until she married and raised two sons. , "As a boy, I used to hear her tell this story and urge us never to forget what Seligsohn did. 'Always be kind to his people. They are special,' she used to say. ' rhe years rolled on. In 1932, I suffered a nervous breakdown as a freshman at Kent State and was confined to the college infirmary. A yotmg English teacher named Dr. Florence Beall came to my rescue. 'Don't even think of dropping out,' she said. 'I will help you keep up your studies and solve your speech problem.' "Dr. Beall, now in her 90s, lives alone on a farm near Newark, Ohio. I go there each season to gain inspiration. When we parted at Thanks- giving three years ago, she squeezed my hand and said, 'I seem to see a bit of me shining through...' "Several days later, after seeing about 20 students dur- ing morning office hours, I dashed out for lunch. Half- way down the stairs I met a young girl. 'Can I see you?' she asked. "'Not until tomorrow,' I gasped. 'I've got to eat now, and teach a one-o'clock. You know I am always there from 10 to 127 "'But I must see you now,' she said, as tears filled her eyes. We went up to my office and talked the full hour. Her problems? In the last two weeks, her mother had died, her roommate had stolen her lover, and she had failed two midterms. Now she seemed in extremity. %Ve wept together, as I recalled how Dr. Seligsohn saved Mother, and Dr. Beall saved me. I finally got her to promise she would come in every morning for two weeks. "At Christmas she sent a letter that bears repeating: 'I have come to accept my mother's death... I passed my finals and have a wonder- ful new boyfriend. Things are much better now. It's a good thingI found you on the stairs that day. If I hadn't, I would have killed myself.' 'Tier postscript gave me hope the chain of love will be unbroken. She said, 'Some- day I'll find a way to Pass It On.' ~' "Serving Ranchers & Farmers Since 1939" 1-800-541 - 1612 D.E.
