Spartans Edge A determined Pine-Eagle Spartan squad outlasted a scrappy Bobcat team from Union in Halfway, Friday night by a 61-57 score. Two free throws by Matt Collins with 51 seconds remaining broke a 57-all deadlock and stingy defense at the finish sealed the Spartans' second Wapiti League win of the young season. Sonny Gulick led Pine- Eagle scorers with 18, while Matt connected for 15 points and Bill Farley added 11. The following night in John Day, the Spartans suffered their first league loss, 59-48, at the hands of the always- dangerous Grant Union Pros- pectors. "We were in this game, all the way," said Pine-Eagle coach Ron Godwin. "We were ahead by 8 in the second quarter, but we got down six with two minutes to go, and then it got away." Twenty-nine Pine-Eagle turnovers didn't help the Spartan cause in Saturday's loss. Bill Farley played a strong ame off the boards, grabbing 13 rebounds and Matt Collins contributed 16 points including 7-8 free throw shooting. ill Ill[ SPARTAN STATS Pine-Eagle Gifts vs. Union Player FG FT R Pts. Grant Union's 6'1" starter scored 18 points against Pine- Eagle in the first quarter. The junior varsity girls suf- fered their first defeat of the season, 31-30 in Friday's game with Union.
